Houston Heights

The Houston Heights Neighborhood

The Heights sits on higher ground, literally. This Houston neighborhood stands more than 60 feet above sea level. It is a closely knit community in the Houston area real estate market that values history and embraces diversity.
Houston Heights Neighborhood Construction
Oscar Martin Carter, president of the South Texas Land Company, dreamt of an idyllic community far from the hustle and bustle of the Houston metro area. He set out to achieve his dream in 1891. He acquired 1,756 acres of property in outskirts of Houston. Construction promptly began in 1892.
Heights Area Electric Rail Car
The Heights was one of the first planned communities of Houston. Martin wanted to maximize the sight’s elevation which naturally protected the area against floods. He invested heavily in electric infrastructures. The result was a Houston neighborhood connected by streetcars.
Houston Heights Victorian Homes
The 1950s was a trying period for the Houston area real estate market. The neighborhoods declined and the population plunged. The Houston Heights Association was established in 1973. They implemented several measures, such as deed restrictions, to prevent their Houston neighborhood from declining further. Their efforts paid off. As of today the Houston Heights is one of only two historical districts found in the city. This has led the Heights to be one of the only neighborhoods that has preserved the Victorian style architecture found during the earlier years of Houston’s development.

The Heights is considered one of the most beautiful places to live in Houston. Beautiful architecture, meticulously maintained parks and a visible skyline give off a sophisticated old world vibe. It is close to the busy downtown area so you never have to compromise tranquility for a shorter commute.
